Summary :
Cullen and I took "Freedom"
out for the maiden
voyage and shakedown cruise. We arrive at the resovior around
13:00 with the boat atop the Pacifica. We unloaded
the boat
and began assembly. It would have taken about 30 minutes to
assemble but we had many onlookers with lots of questions.
Cullen was a great crew and was quick with the tools and asssitance in
getting all together. In addition to the boat we had PFD's,
paddles, boat cushions, swiss army knife, rags for bailing, GPS, and
waterbottles.

Summary : The resovior is about 10 mins
from my
house. Good thing today as I left the boom in the
garage.
Light but steady winds. I had a good day out on the resovior,
pretty much all to myself. 3-4 MPH on the
GPS.
The only ongoing challenge seems to be the leeboard doesn't wan't to
stay down, this is going to take some thought to address.
This
small body of water is a great place to test things out but I'm ready
to take Trilars to the next level.

Location : Crabtree
Lake, Raleigh NC
Summary : First time
our on Lake Crabtree
and it was nice to have a larger (though still small) to sail on. The
winds were a steady 10+ mph and I was out racing the Sunfish sailboats
that are rented at the consession. They didn't know there
were
racing. Also a family as relaunching a skiff that had been
their
grandfathers years ago that they had restored. I love the herons that
nest at the lake, they are so big and are fun to watch fly.
They
guys in the yellow dinghy below left sailed over to me with keen
interest in my trimaran. I sailed up and down the lake and
worked
on sailing to predetermined points, both up and down wind. I am still
having challenges with the lee board staying down, I may need to invest
in a fancy pressure release cleat, or see what I can do with a bit of
bungee cord. With the fresher breeze I needed to tighten the
snotter to keep it closer to the mast, and it was some work trimming
the sail with no mechanical advantage with the mainsheet connected
directly to the boom. I will need to try to add a block to
the
aft brace and run the sheet through to make it easier to trim.
I spent about 5 hours out, had my usual PBJ sandwich and lots of
water. She really is a fun boat to sail, I just need to find
a
way to reduce set up and take apart time.

Summary : I can't believe it's
been two months
since I last sailed, where has the summer gone. I loaded up
Trilars for an afternoon daysail. I was having some trouble getting the
left float on when I noticed it was the right one,
duh!! I
need to clearly paint on them L and R. The wind was fresh
today,
good consist breeze from the north. From the north means in
your
face at the launch. As usual the Trilars draws some attention
from passers by and I now take folks up on offers to help assemble,
lift and launch. After several strokes of the paddle I made
my
way out far enough to turn 90 degees east, catch the wind and off I go.
Making 3-4 MPH easy I tack all the way up the lake, she
points
pretty well.

Spent the day sailing with some new friends from the Carolina Sailing
Club (Day Sailers) . There was an regatta for a group of
youngsters in Optimist prams. I met some new folks including
Dean
and Susan Hering, Gary and his daughter Jennifer. John Nabors
who
lead the regatta. Lake Jordan is a nice big lake, but the
power
boats sure do cause a stir. Shown below is Dean's Puddle Duck
Racer, my Trilars and the Opti's. Video link of the PDR in

Henderson point
Spent the day sailing and picnic with Dean and Susan (and their 2
boxers) at Kerr Lake - Henderson Point. There are multiple
lauches
there and I assembled and launched at the middle parking lot and had a
good wind out of the cove. As I came around the lauch ramps to
the
North there is a long sandbar that I had to sail out and around to meet
up with my friends. Then the wind died. around 12:30 we decided
on
grilled our hotdogs. After lunch the breeze picked up some enough
to
sail out about halfway across the lake. Then the wind started to
shift
30degress east then anoth 15 and with all the motor boats out it became
a a bit of a bumpy ride. Saling back to the glass house lauch
where we
had lunch I did catch some wind near shore and made a couple of passes
but the waves from fellow boaters got to be too much, so landed and
called it a day. I did have my new 59 sqft polytarp leg-o-mutton sail.
It set well when there was wind, with less sail area then the
penguin
sail I only saw a top speed fo 4.4 mph on the GPS. Not sure if it
was
a function of the sail or the wind conditions, hopefully I'll get out a
couple of more times this year to test.. Below are a couple of
pictures on is Dean in his Shell boat canoe yawl in the calm, and the
other is of Trilars with new sail.

On Sunday may 30th, I loaded up the Trilars on the trailer for the 500
mile trip to Pittsburgh PA. While the utility trailer I've been
using has worked well, I added a 18" (13" actual usable) extension to
the hitch receiver on my car. It always the boat to be moved
forward about an extra foot to give much better balance and tongue
weight. I have to say that trailering added about and extra 90
mintutes to the normal 8 hour drive. Upon arrival to
Pittsburgh the trailer sat in an ally overnight and on Memorial day I
transported the 45 miles to Moraine State Park. I know have a dry
mooring at Watts bay which will make using the boat this summer much
easier. Once I had secured my parking space and state park launch
permit I was all set to assemble Freedom.
What's nice is that she can stay assembled on the trailer
this summer with only 200 yds to the beach launch. After
assembly and a quick lunch I took her for the first sail of the season.
I met a nice guy, Paul, who helped lift Freedom off the trailer
and put in next to his Weta Tri. Sail was really good, I never
had to pull the paddle out, sailed off the beach at Watts Bay and
around the lake for several hours. I saw many boats out on the
holiday, even two other home built boats. A Herresof design and
an East Port Pram (a Chesapeake Light Craft Kit boat). Below is
a picture of the hitch extension with step.

A very blustery day, Great sailing, but found a couple of issues that
need to be address with the boat.
1. mast needs to be rebuilt, the butt joints were not hold up well in
strong wind and had some fear of breaking. Also may need to taper
less for more strength
2. sail the grommett at the aft end of the boom is tearing away from
the sail, good thing I had the rope round the parameter, kept the sail
trogether.
