Buildboats.com Review

I have long admired the Nancy's China design. She is a versatile minimal camp cruiser with salty looks and a pleasing sheer line. The versatility can be expressed in at least three design features, sail plan, cabin or daysailer, and auxiliary power.  This design comes with plans for three different sail plans; Square sprit rig, Gaff rig and Bermuda rig. The plans sent for this review included the Gaff rig, cabin hull configuration.  Additionally the plans can be delivered to you in two formats, traditional paper via mail or download of pdf files.

The version supplied for review is the PDF version.  At the time they were provided written instructions were still in the works.  One can use any stitch and glue primer or Sam's book to use a reference.  Show below is a composite of all the sheets in the pdf plan sheets, all are easy to read and can be scaled up on your screen with free pdf viewing software.

Nancy's China is in a class with CLC's PockectShip.  She has 300+ pounds of lead/epoxy ballast in the cabin sole.  This should provide for a more stable ride than some of her un-ballasted peers.  She has very graceful lines, actually quite salty look which is very appealing.  As all boats are a compromise Nancy's China has a good balance between enough room to camp in the cabin and to sail in the cockpit.

The boat is built on a platform, but it is really a quite simple setup and few parts, 4 bulkheads, stem and four panels make up the main hull.  There are bench seats and the angled sides should make for a comfortable ride. The cuddy cabin with flat cabin sole should provide enough room to camp for the night and carry supplies.  When glassed, coated with epoxy and painted it should reduce the amount of maintenance needed.

Nancy's China looks to be a great boat for protected waterways, with enough structure and ballast to push the limits.  Sam Devlin is well known for his designs and I have spoken with builders who also say he is great to work with and provides ample support for questions.

Nancy's China looks to be a great boat with reasonably priced plans.
