Buildboats.com Review

When you purchase plans from Glen-L marine you will receive a robust set of plans, and much more. Glen-L is a family run business that makes you feel like part of the family.  The plans arrived only two days after I spoke with Gayle that type of turnaround time is excellent and not that common compared to other plans that I have purchased.  I have also listed over 20 glen-l projects this month in the links section of buildboats.com.  Many of these sites mention how helpful the Glen-L family was during the building process.  Great customer service these days is hard to come by, Glen-L provides it.

On to the plans, there is always excitement for a boat builder when a new set arrives in the mailbox, and as I opened the package containing the Minuet plans it was like Christmas.  Four sheets of very detailed plans, two large full size patterns for all of the frames, transom, stem, centerboard and rudder components.  Also included is a 15 page building manual, which is extremely helpful for any level of builder, but especially for those with less experience.  Some plan sets assume you have an understanding of boat plans and need little instruction, or recommend you purchase a boatbuilding book.   While this can be helpful with Glen-L plans it is certainly not necessary as everything you need is included.  Additionally there is a two sided sheet of "Pattern Instructions" which provides instructions on how to construct the frames, transom and additional parts from the full-size patterns. To top off the pack of building resources there is a 12 page general "picture" book on building any Glen-L boat of the plywood on frame variety.

The Minuet is a small trailer sailer, I would classify as a micro cruiser. A nice    weekend boat for a cozy two in the cabin...  Her 15' length would allow her to be built in the family garage.  She has a wide beam for her length which should make her stable and easy to learn to sail, and her size she should be comfortable for a day sail for four.  She is certainly not intended to be a speed demon.  Her fractional rig, (meaning the forestay attaches partway down on the mast) and end of boom traveler should be simple to operate and leave room to move about in the cockpit.

The plans sheets are very robust, lots of detail on each sheet, almost too busy, so the builder will pay attention to all the details.  The plywood on frame construction does require some more work in comparison to a stitch & glue variety but does result in an extremely strong hull.   I like the Minuet as a micro cruising sailboat for the home boat builder.

As you scroll down the page you will see what each of the plan sheets look like and some pictures of a complete Minuet I found on the web.
