Buildboats.com Review

Most of the books reviewed to date have been "how to"  on boat building or restoration.  Lawerence Cheek's "The year of the boat" is a different "how to" book.  It is a "how to" fit a boat building project into ones life, or at least how he did.   The author chronicals his building of a Sam Devlin designed day sailer and provides the intimate details of he trials, tribulations and ultimate satisfaction as the process weaves through over a year of his life.

For anyone who has built a boat, or taken on any significant sized project you will be able to relate to the challenges and successes Larry shares in his writing.  He is very open about his feelings and his self criticism is sometimes at a level that made me cringe, truly showing we all deal in our own ways.  The story as a great mix of boat building and life lessons, which in turn provides a platform for self reflection.  intertwined is a theme of quality, how good can I make it and do I want it versus getting a boat built in an acceptable time and budget.

I really enjoyed the book and appreciate the author's open insight into his life, relationships and boat building, I recommend it as a good read.
