When I first picked up "Small Trimarans an Introduction I
thought I would be reading a niche book on trimarans. While it does fall into that
category it also does provide broader perspective on the thinking of boat designers, bios
and boat performance. Those interested in small trimarans will certainly enjoy this
book and that should not be the limit to the audience that will enjoy the book. Each
chapter is derived from an interview with a Trimaran designer and typically discusses how
he became involved with trimarans, boat design and sailing. As can be seen in the
TOC above these are some of the most knowledgable designers and many of their plans can be
found on the their own websites or those such as duckworksbbs.com. The chapters are a
combination of biography, boat design review, performance review and general sailing.
Thre is a good numbe of pictures that supports the interviews. Trailing small
trimarans can be done with or without assmebly and disassembly this infomation is included
in most cases. The
author Joe Farinaccio also has the website www.smalltrimarans.com
. He writes some articles and posts others all about small trimarans of course (30'
and under) If you purchase the book from his website he also sends additional
chapters in PDF via email. While
this book is not boat building focused I still find it a great resource for the aspiring
trimaran builder. It provides perspective on how design affects performance, and it
illustrates as we know all boats are a compromise and highlights those elements that
should be considered whe/n selecting a small trimaran. |
